Dictave

Download

Dictave for Mac

One file. No account, no installer that asks you questions, nothing to activate. Drag it in, hold a key, start talking.

  • Size 346 MB — the full speech engine is inside, which is why nothing needs the internet later
  • Requires macOS 13 Ventura or later
  • Runs on Apple silicon and Intel — one universal download

Installing

  1. Open the downloaded disk image and drag Dictave into Applications.
  2. Open Dictave from Applications.
  3. It walks you through the two permissions it needs — the microphone so it can hear you, and Accessibility, which is what macOS requires before any app may watch for a shortcut and type into other apps.
  4. Try it on the practice line the setup screen offers, so the first real thing you dictate is not also your first attempt.
  5. Dictave then lives in your menu bar. Hold your shortcut anywhere and start talking.

Removing it

Drag Dictave from Applications to the Bin. Its history and settings go with it. Nothing is left behind on your machine, and there was never anything to remove from anywhere else.

Windows and Linux

Both are being built, as real native applications rather than the Mac one in a wrapper. Neither has a date, and neither will be announced before there is a build worth using. This page is where they will appear.
